Greeting the Guests with a Wave! Zhejiang Lab's Technology Unveiled at the Opening Ceremony of the Hangzhou Asian Games
Date: 2023-10-08

The opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou took place last night at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium, nicknamed the "Big Lotus". The opening ceremony, themed "Tides Surging in Asia", offers a panoramic view of Hangzhou's ancient charm and modern technology, drawing all Asian nations' attention to Hangzhou, a "Paradise on Earth". The opening ceremony's cultural performance kicked off with a warm-up video titled Meet in Hangzhou directed by LU Chuan, Chief Director of the Opening Ceremony and a well-known film director, in which Zhejiang Lab's intelligent biped robots made a surprise appearance.arm-up video titled Meet in Hangzhou directed by LU Chuan, Chief Director of the Opening Ceremony and a well-known film director, in which Zhejiang Lab's intelligent biped robots made a surprise appearance.

"We have built a high-performance biped robot for it. Based on our intelligent 'cloud brain' system, it can understand various instructions such as voice and image, enabling independent decision-making and task automation. With a full sense of science and technology, it looks very attractive..." LIU Yun, a member of the project team, had plenty to talk about this robot. Recently, the project team has updated its new gait stabilization algorithm, making robots walk more stable and faster.

LIU Yun still remembered that weekend when being informed that a video production team from the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou Organizing Committee was coming to capture views at the Lab. "We need to assemble three robots in two days and make them perform specific actions in coordination with the film crew, leaving us with limited time."

The work was more difficult than we had expected. In the early shooting process, the project team encountered unexpected situations such as weak outdoor signals and high temperatures leading to body heating. Just when we were at a loss, Director LU Chuan's affirmation of this robot revived our confidence. "Mr. LU likes the robot very much and encourages us to solve technical problems, hoping that it could appear in the film representing Hangzhou's technological elements," LIU Yun said. After research and testing, the video production team finished shooting and collecting footage at the Lab's site in only about 2 hours, giving a perfect presentation of our intelligent biped robot in the warm-up video.

"I'm very excited and proud when seeing our robot waving at people at the opening ceremony, as if it were greeting the world on our behalf. Although the future is full of challenges, we always believe in the power of technology to make life better. This is our initial intention as researchers, but also our mission," said AN Mengfei, a member of the project team. "I believe that intelligent robots will bring more surprises in the future, allowing people to benefit from technological advancements," YAO Yunchang, a member of the project team, added.

It is reported that in the three years of preparation, LU Chuan and the director team traveled across Hangzhou. The finished film depicts China's natural resources, Hangzhou's history, and Asian camaraderie, visualizing the past and present of Hangzhou. "Tides Surging", the core element of the emblem of the Hangzhou Asian Games, serves as an emotional bond and finishing touch to reflect Hangzhou's openness, inclusiveness and enthusiasm since ancient times, which is a direct expression of the slogan "Heart to Heart, @ Future" for the Hangzhou Asian Games. "The warm-up video is a love letter sent by the director team to Hangzhou, and also an open invitation sent by Hangzhou to the world."

In addition to the appearance of intelligent biped robots at the opening ceremony of the Asian Games, two robot pianists "Xiao Le" played music at the Asian Games Village and the reception hotels for the Asian Games these days. Athletes gathered to watch "Xiao Le's" performances, and even a musician and "Xiao Le" played the world-known classical music Ode to Joy together, spicing up the Asian Games with technology and arts.
