Culture Development Through Millennia-old Art—"The Series of Ancient Chinese Paintings" in Zhejiang Lab
Date: 2023-05-18

As ancients put it, "paintings on the left and historical records on the right" and "reading and enjoy paintings", painting has always been an important part of reading. On the occasion of "World Book and Copyright Day", Zhejiang Lab (ZJ Lab) held an educational and cultural campaign with the theme of "Sustain the Culture and Nurture the Spirit". An exhibition featuring "The Series of Ancient Chinese Paintings" was staged for researchers to feel the endless Chinese culture and strengthen cultural self-confidence. ZHU Shiqiang, President of ZJ Lab and head of the themed education leading group, attended the opening ceremony and announced the opening of the event.

Compiled and published by Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, "The Series of Ancient Chinese Paintings" is a national major cultural project approved by President XI Jinping in 2005 and has been receiving close and consistent attention. The compilation lasted for 17 years to vividly reproduce the mighty current of paintings in more than 2,000 years of Chinese history.

Read ancient paintings in ancient books, and read ancient books in ancient paintings. "In ancient paintings, we can trace the source of Chinese history and the development of nature and technology." At the opening ceremony, JIN Xiaoming, deputy director of the Ancient Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Research Center at Zhejiang University, shared the story of an American biologist who explored the influence of social environment changes on biological variation by studying the creatures recorded in Song Dynasty paintings. He noted that science and art have always been closely related. ZJ Lab, a new research and development institution, aims to stress the study of China's fine traditional culture and show the new look of scientific researchers in the new era. "I believe in the excellent tradition of 'self-cultivating, family management, state governance, and bringing peace to all under heaven' will surely be inherited and continued in ZJ Lab."

CHEN Wei, Assistant President of the Lab and Deputy Head of the themed education leading group, presided over the opening ceremony and quoted General Secretary XI Jinping, saying that China's fine traditional culture is the wisdom and essence of Chinese civilization, the root and soul of the Chinese nation, and the foundation for us to gain a firm footing amidst global cultural interaction. Since its establishment, ZJ Lab has attached great importance to cultural development, and has put forward the core concept of "Dedication to Science and National Prosperity". "The spirit of dedication to science is a must-have pursuit for every scientific and technological worker, and the dedication to national prosperity comes from the values of the Chinese nation. We hope that every member of ZJ Lab can draw on the essence of China's fine traditional culture and cultivate a vital spirit. In the new journey of building China into a science and technology giant and marching toward the second centenary goal, we should keep in mind "national interest", set lofty ideals, combine the "small ego" and the "greater self", and make our due contribution to achieving greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology."

The opening ceremony also had the attendance of members of leadership, members of the cultural development committee, middle-level cadres, and representatives of the Painting and Calligraphy Association. After the opening ceremony, the attendees also visited the exhibition with the guide.

During the exhibition, each department and research institute/center will organize members to visit the exhibition and enjoy the millennia-old art while refreshing their "Dedication to Science and National Prosperity".
