The 2023 China (Zhejiang) Online Technology Market Week Opening Ceremony and the First Zhejiang Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Conference took place at the Zhejiang Innovation Museum on the morning of December 11, 2023. LI Chao, a Research Fellow from Zhejiang Lab (ZJ Lab), released the results of research on onboard intelligent computers at the S&T achievements promotion session under the theme of "Zhejiang Innovation", a major science and technology innovation platform.
"Major national infrastructure, deep space exploration, Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) program and other applications have an urgent demand for on-orbit intelligent computing resources. However, because of the harsh environment of space and the limited energy supply and space, the autonomous operation and reliability of computers are facing great challenges," said LI Chao at the event. To address difficulties and challenges in on-orbit intelligent computing, the research team of ZJ Lab has carried out the relevant research for nearly two years, and successfully developed two onboard intelligent computers, namely "Smart Plus X10" and "Aurora 1000-Smart Eye".

According to LI Chao, "Smart Plus X10" and "Aurora 1000-Smart Eye" are made up of homemade components. In terms of design, "Smart Plus X10" is characterized by great computational power, high reliability in software and hardware, high power density thermal control, and structural optimization for weight reduction, with its onboard computational power reaching 640TOPS, energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 1.1TOPS/W, and weight of 10.4 kg. It can provide high-capacity, high-efficiency, high-reliability on-orbit intelligent computing services for remote sensing satellites and astronomical satellites. "Aurora 1000-Smart Eye" provides 32TOPS using only 35W power and weighs 1.4 kg, contributing to low-power highly reliable on-orbit computing. "Aurora 1000-Smart Eye" will be launched in early 2024 as a high-performance intelligent processing payload for DFHY-01 satellite.
"These two products have the characteristics of localization and independent control, low-cost customization and five-year on-orbit lifetime, which is in line with the advanced national strategic orientation." LI Chao said, "Their on-orbit real-time processing functions can serve multiple scenarios such as natural disaster monitoring, environmental and ecological monitoring, urbanization, intelligent transportation, and intelligent agriculture."
At the major S&T achievements release event held in the afternoon of the same day, ZJ Lab's five achievements, including Biological Intelligent Computing Platform 1.0 and computing-empowered new photoacoustic microscope, were unveiled, which fully demonstrates ZJ Lab's philosophy of "Computing for Innovation" and technological breakthroughs and innovations with focus on intelligent computing.
In the field of AI for Science, ZJ Lab showcased its latest achievements in research on biology and materials. At the event, TANG Jin, a Senior Engineering Expert from ZJ Lab, introduced how the Biological Intelligent Computing Platform assists with protein data mining, modification and design. He said that his team has independently researched and improved more than 10 algorithms and tools for protein data mining and design, and takes the lead in the world to establish a genome-wide CRISPR-Cas system for gene editing and protease screening purposes based on large language models (LLMs). Meanwhile, relying on its Biological Intelligent Computing Platform, ZJ Lab has cooperated with a number of companies engaged in synthetic biology and gene therapy to conduct technology research and development concerning CRISPR gene-editing enzymes, PET-degrading enzymes, and synthetic metabolic enzymes, etc. CHEN Lipeng, an Associate Research Fellow from ZJ Lab, shared the work on research and development of Intelligent Computational Materials Platform 1.0. The platform realizes micro- and macro-scale materials computation, which can improve materials R&D efficiency and reduce the R&D cost. CHEN Lipeng said at the event that we welcome trial applications from R&D personnel in the industry, hoping to provide technical services for industrial innovation.
In the field of life and health, the research team of ZJ Lab proposed a computing-empowered new photoacoustic microscopy technology. "With the support of computing technology, a fresh specimen of tissue that has the same pathology test results as the conventional tissue can be obtained in ten minutes without slicing and staining," said YANG Yong, an Associate Research Fellow from ZJ Lab. The instrument based on this technology has been clinically validated in large medical institutions. In addition, the research team of ZJ Lab developed a 3D wide-field photoacoustic computational imaging system with high precision and high speed. WANG Xuanhao, a postdoc from ZJ Lab, explained that the computational imaging system facilitates clinical pre-experimental research and clinical application and transformation in the field of life sciences.
In the field of intelligent manufacturing, the research team of ZJ Lab developed polymorphic network core devices and network systems, and completed the design and verification of application solutions for smart factory. ZHU Jun, a Senior Engineer from ZJ Lab, said that the project outcomes can provide flexible and efficient network solutions for intelligent manufacturing scenarios such as machine vision-based quality control and production line control, and will provide strong technical support for the high-end, intelligent and green development of China's manufacturing industry.
At present, we have entered a new era of sci-tech innovation that is "computing-intensive, data-driven and model-based". Computing, as an important innovation engine, is fully changing S&T innovation patterns and accelerating industrial development.
