Intelligent Computing, a partner journal of Science founded in January 2022, was inaugurated recently. Prof. ZHU Shiqiang, President of Zhejiang Lab, and Prof. SUN Ninghui, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of the Institute of Computing Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences co-published an Inaugural Editorial as the editor-in-chief. The Inaugural Editorial highlights the journal's mission, vision and orientation, i.e., Intelligent Computing will share the latest research findings and significant technical breakthroughs in the world's intelligent computing area focusing on the core themes of intelligence-oriented and intelligence-driven computing and intelligence-, data- and computing-driven scientific discoveries, to promote continuous scientific and technical progress in terms of intelligent computing. Intelligent computing is an emerging field of computing science and intelligent technology. As the human society entered the intelligent era, network and computer science has become part of our life, and our demand for computing been exploding. To meet the increasing demand for computing, people more desire for sustainable solutions in computing strength, data security, energy consumption and intelligence level in the future.
The rapid development of AI is closely related with computing science. Intelligent computing has enabled the explosive revolution of AI in recent years. AI innovation relies on computing science and technology to a large extent, and progress in AI technology greatly promotes innovations in computing science in turn, particularly through new research modes achieved via state-of-the-art computing approaches. AI science and technology have become one of the focuses for the global scientific research, and the conventional information science has begun to shift to such emerging fields as data intelligence, independent unmanned equipment and system, deep learning, machine consciousness, and even metaverse.
Playing an important role in AI, computing methodology provides strong, effective, intelligent and trustworthy computing solutions for AI development and innovation. In the days to come, we'll establish new computing theories, architectures and models, and develop new computing equipment, hardware and software. Additionally, we'll expect quantum computing, photon computing, bionic computing, brain-like computing and more new computing modes. Specific computing, intelligent supercomputing, heterogeneous computing cluster and wide-area collaborative computing play more significant roles. Cognitive computing, swarm intelligence and human-machine interactive computing are helpful for the development and popularization of ambient intelligence.
Likewise, AI-based methodologies have boosted the development of computing science and technology. AI-powered technical innovations, in particular, remarkably improve various computing systems' complicated functions and performances, and allow the synergic restructuring of software and hardware, intelligent breakdown of computing assignments, automatic allocation and adaption of computing resources, thus achieving effective, safe and transparent computing functions.
Intelligent computing is an inter-discipline science. Through in-depth integration of machine intelligence, data and computing methodologies, major intelligent computing-based scientific findings and application of important technologies have been reported in many important areas, with representative examples such as intelligent computing biology, intelligent computing material science, intelligent computing physics and intelligent social science. Thanks to the powerful support of AI in biological experiments, we could discover new powerful antibody compounds (super antibiotics) in several weeks, instead of years in the past. For example, protein folding, a half-century biological puzzle, has been solved with the help of AI and computing supports recently.
We newly founded Intelligent Computing, to encourage and advance research exchanges and cooperation relating to intelligent computing throughout the world's technological circle. It is the first international journal for Open Access on intelligent computing under the partner framework of the Science. The journal will share the latest research findings and significant technical breakthroughs in the world's intelligent computing area focusing on the core themes of intelligence-oriented and intelligence-driven computing and intelligence-, data- and computing-driven scientific discoveries, to promote continuous scientific and technical progress in terms of intelligent computing.
