The results are out. Today marked the culmination of the AI and Space Computing Challenge, an initiative launched as part of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) AI for Good programme, with an awards ceremony celebrating 106 teams from around the world who have spent months turning satellite data into real-world solutions to some of humanity’s greatest challenges.
What this challenge made clear is something much simpler: behind every model and every dataset were people, researchers, students and engineers, who asked themselves how technology from space could tangibly improve life on Earth.
The competition was divided into three tracks, each tackling a challenge that impacts millions of people.
‘Space Intelligence Empowers Food Production’, to help communities improve food security through better use of Earth observation data. ‘Space Intelligence for Water Quality’ to safeguard one of the world’s most precious and vulnerable resources. “Space Intelligence Enabling Resilient Urban Environments” to prepare cities for the impact of a changing climate.
These are issues that are not just theoretical but represent to all intents and purposes the daily reality for farmers tracking crop stress, city planners preparing extreme heatwaves, and communities that rely on access to clean water. It’s no coincidence that the Challenge invited participants to confront this reality with equal parts of rigour and creativity.
Among the teams that entered, 106 qualified for the final round: 56 in the food production track, 27 in the water quality track and 23 in the urban resilience track, from China, Brazil, India, Oman, Tanzania, Turkey, Indonesia, Australia, Nigeria, Nepal, Côte d’Ivoire, Pakistan and Sweden.
The evaluation framework was developed to evaluate two complementary aspects: the technical performance of each model and the feasibility of its implementation. This dual approach was reflected in the final evaluation methodology, with 60% weight given to the model’s performance and 40% to the proposed solution, recognising that technical excellence alone is not enough without an established path towards practical application.
In Track 1 for food production, xingyuanhe was awarded the Gold Award, and transformer, DAAI and HappyEnding received the Silver Award. The Bronze Award was won by Kavayam, DeerJump, xinggeng, OmanLens and Elegance NO.1. The Innovation Awards were won by Haidi Xiaozongdui, HAUMEA, Demeter, SCISAP, luojia, DiasF Team, kybelix and ZJNU paddy pioneers.
NBU@STAR won the Gold Award, sfsatlinkII the Silver Award and Yuan Quan the Bronze Award for Track 2 on water quality. DiasF1, AiFlow Vision Monitoring Pioneers, Zhi Hu Qing Liu, S2WISH, MonashBRIN and HydroSat Systems have all won Innovation
Track 3: Urban Resilience Gewu RS Team won the Gold Award and Heat Island Guardian, AiFlow Vision Monitoring Pioneers, and Omada Friday Ojonugwa won the Silver Award. Loong Mountain, Stellar Keen, Heat Sccape, HeriTech and Climate Guardians won the Bronze Award. The Innovation Awards went to zhaoxiang, SavanticAILab, HEATWISE, StarDetect, TerraFlux and The Zhijiang nauts.
What’s next?
Many of these are now ready to move beyond the competition’s datasets and take their first steps towards pilot schemes, collaborations and real world applications.
We want to sincerely thank all 106 finalist teams for showing what happens when curiosity, technical expertise and a real desire to make a difference are brought together in one place. The view from space is only good if someone on the ground knows what to do with it, and today 106 teams have proven they do.
