As the essential force driving a new round of industrial transformation, artificial intelligence is having a profound influence on people’s lives and reshaping the world. How to further develop the potential of artificial intelligence in pushing forward innovation, how to drive software and hardware innovation, and how to embrace open source — these are all pressing problems before us. At the AIIA Artificial Intelligence Developer Conference 2019 on November 2nd, the Dubhe Artificial Intelligence Open Source Platform was launched to great acclaim. Led by Zhejiang Lab, the platform has been the result of the joint efforts of the lab and other technology pioneers, including Zhejiang University, Beijing Oneflow Technology, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, and Alibaba. The platform aims to become an industry leader to establish an artificial intelligence cooperation ecosystem and to facilitate the development of the industry.
Dubhe, in Chinese mythology, not only leads the rest of the seven stars in the Big Dipper but also serves as a cultural symbol of wisdom. “We hope that we can gather together leading innovative forces in the industry to provide a high-performance platform and framework for the development of artificial intelligence algorithms, and establish an independent artificial intelligence research and industrial ecosystem,” said Zhu Shiqiang, the director of Zhejiang Lab, when he introduced the origin of the name of the platform.
To establish an innovation ecosystem for the healthy and effective development of artificial intelligence technologies, we must embrace open source to gather together different participants. At the release conference, Zhejiang Lab and China Artificial Intelligence Industrial Alliance signed a memorandum of open source and cooperation, according to which both organizations will join hands to push forward technology development and community building on Dubhe.
In addition, Dubhe as an AI open-source platform covers six areas, including intelligent vision, intelligent transport, intelligent finance, smart city, intelligent healthcare, and intelligent robots. It has welcomed its first 48 partners including Alibaba Cloud, Ant Financial, Hikvision, Sense Time, Deep Glint, China Construction Bank, Ant Work and Ecovacs Robotics, to establish an artificial intelligence alliance ecosystem. These partners will help promote the application of artificial intelligence technologies in different industries through their joint efforts in building the platform and opening source their innovations.
Academician Pan Yunhe of the China Academy of Engineering, the chief scientist in artificial intelligence at Zhejiang Lab, said in a speech that "the artificial intelligence open-source platform will play a crucial role as the operating system of all artificial intelligence technologies. The participation of organizations from different industries has laid a solid foundation and I am looking forward to seeing a growing artificial intelligence algorithm research community on the platform. I hope that Dubhe Artificial Intelligence Open Source Platform can push forward the application of AI technologies in different industries.”
Led by platform architects such as Bao Hujun, the deputy director of Zhejiang Lab, Dr. Yuan Jinhui, the founder of Beijing Oneflow Technology, Professor Zhang Dongxiang at Zhejiang University, Professor Xu Xiaogang at Zhejiang Gongshang University, Dr. Huang Jun at Alibaba, Researcher Wu Chaoyan at Zhejiang University, Deputy Professor Cai Min at Zhejiang University and Dr. Shan Haijun at Zhejiang Lab, Dubhe Artificial Intelligence Open Source Platform will take advantage of its differentiating performance to stand out above existing frameworks and serve both fundamental artificial intelligence research and the development of the industry.
To further push forward Dubhe as an industry-education-research cooperation open-source platform, at the Dubhe Ecosystem Conference industry leaders were appointed as ecosystem ambassadors of the platform and received appointment letters from Academician Pan Yunhe and Huyan, the director of the Technology Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. These industry leaders include: Zhu Shiqiang, the director of Zhejiang Lab; Liu Duo, the director of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology; Professor Zhuang Yueting, the director of the province- and ministry-administered artificial intelligence cooperation innovation center at Zhejiang University; Liu Xiangwen, the general manager of the artificial intelligence strategy and cooperation department of Alibaba Cloud; and Jiang Xiaoli, the general manager of Huawei Infrastructure Cloud Service Open Source Ecosystem.
Meanwhile, the responsibility to gather more platform participants and develop strategies to promote artificial intelligence technologies in their own areas has fallen on the shoulders of six doctoral students.
Today, with massive accumulated healthcare data, using medical artificial intelligence to provide new technologies and methods has become a pressing need. Dr. Tian Yu, the ecosystem convener of the intelligent healthcare area, said, “the core computing framework of the Dubhe Artificial Intelligence Open Source Platform has been developed independently to make it more effective in processing massive data, which will greatly benefit research on medical natural language processing and medical image processing. In addition, knowledge-generating models and automatic machine learning technologies will facilitate model training in the intelligent healthcare area and benefit medical research, clinical treatments and, finally, patients.”
Dr. Xiao Zhenmin, the ecosystem convener of the smart city area, said that thanks to the advantage of Zhejiang Lab in big data, Dubhe Artificial Intelligence Open Source Platform will benefit the construction of smart cities by providing smart cities with a clear perception, a scientific decision-making system and the ability to make quick reactions. “When we train our models with built-in models provided by the platform, our researchers can better develop the value of the data as a whole while the privacy of data can remain under protection.” He said.
“Zhejiang Lab has built the Dubhe platform to live up to our responsibility and fill the most pressing need of the industry. I believe that the joint efforts of our platform architects, ecosystem ambassadors, and ecosystem partners will make Dubhe an open-source and cooperation platform for AI researchers, developers and the AI industry as a whole. In the meanwhile, I hope that there will be more participants to join us in this ecosystem and share their efforts to push forward the development of artificial intelligence technologies in China,” said Zhu Shiqiang.
